Wychwood Rucksack Overview

Hello, fellow anglers and gear scouts. Today, I aim to present an in-depth review of another Wychwood product that has found its place in my Tackle collection – the Wychwood Comforter Fishing Backpack. As I am an owner of this product, I’m here to provide you with a full no BS overview that dives into every aspect of the Wychwood backpack, good or bad.

My ultimate goal is to equip you with an all-insightful view of the Wychwood Comforter Backpack, stemming from my firsthand experience as a user. With this review, I want to paint a detailed picture of how this backpack functions, its practicality, and how it stands out regarding value and versatility compared to others on the market.

Moving forward, I will explain the key features of the backpack and then go into my own experiences with it later on in the article. With this information we should be able to truly gauge where this product shines and where it might have room for improvement, this is why I have included separate sections dedicated to the pros and cons.

Key Features

Top Quality, Material & Padding

A quality backpack plays an important role when it comes to keeping our fishing equipment in tip-top condition during transportation, and storage. Wychwood have made this rucksack from a strong 600D outer fabric, like all of the products in the Comforter Range.

The backpack feels quality to the touch and is indeed highly durable for any fishing situation, meaning, it will protect your gear from external elements with no problem, including abrasive surfaces and varying weather conditions.

Bespoke Zips

The Wychwood backpack also has the Bespoke zips found on all of the products within the comforter range. I wouldn’t normally class “zips” as a key feature but because I think these are such good quality, I thought it would be worth noting as zips can sometimes be an issue when it comes to products like this. As you can see they are tailored specifically for the Wychwood brand and are thick sturdy zips unlike what you find on low-end fishing tackle.

This contributes to the overall functionality and durability as the zip line has a fabric guide on the inside which helps prevent the zip from snagging when trying to open and close, and also prevents the zip from breaking easily.

Stow away rain cover

Tucked discreetly in the upper section of the Backpack, I recently discovered a hidden gem – a built-in rain cover. First and foremost, it acts as a reliable shield during rainy spells, ensuring your gear remains dry, even in the harshest downpours. Secondly, after a rain shower, when the ground is damp, you can conveniently stretch the cover over the backside of the backpack to keep your belongings dry while you organize your gear on the wet ground. It’s an unexpectedly handy feature that adds to the backpack’s overall practicality.

3 removable compartments

One of the standout features that truly sets this backpack apart is its versatility – you have the option to detach three compartments from the main body. This innovative design not only facilitates impeccable organization but also proves invaluable when you’re constantly on the move, perhaps stalking fish around the lake, and wish to carry only the essentials without lugging the entire backpack.

Each section has individual zippers and front buckles that securely link them together. This particular feature was the primary reason I personally opted for this backpack. I’m a stickler for organization, and this setup makes it a breeze to keep track of all my gear. It prevents the haphazard tossing of equipment into a single compartment during packing, ensuring that everything has its designated space for easy retrieval during my next fishing session.

Split Main Compartment

The primary compartment of the backpack conveniently splits into two sections. When required, these two sections can function as a single, space as a main compartment. Alternatively, you have the option to enhance your organizational capabilities by adding extra mini PackSmart luggage compartments. Having the Mini PackSmart acts as an additional layer of organization for your gear. I will delve into more details about these supplementary PackSmart items later in the review.

Padded Shoulder Straps

Having proper padded shoulder straps on the backpack shows a further commitment from Wychwood, to both comfort and quality. The padding on the shoulder straps is made from the same 600D material and makes all the difference when carrying for long distances. These are also easily adjustable to fit your needs.

Key Features, Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Hardwearing quality product
  • Great for the organised Angler
  • Very comfortable when carrying for long distances

Cons

Not For The Unorganised

While I’ve highlighted the backpack’s organizational capabilities, it’s important to note that its distinct compartment design may require a bit more time during the packing process at the end of your fishing session.

The reason behind this is that you need to pack everything into the backpack in a certain order, otherwise, fitting all your gear back in can be a challenge. This aspect can be viewed both positively and negatively, depending on your personal preferences.

If you’re the type of angler who prefers to toss your gear in without much concern for order, you might want to explore other backpack options which are shown later. This rucksack is undeniably tailored for the organized angler and almost encourages you to maintain order, as specific tackle items require designated spots within the rucksack for efficient packing.

Dimensions, Capacity, Design & Pricing

Dimensions

  • Dimensions; (W) 15″/38.1cm (H) 21″/53.3cm (D) 10″/25.4cm

Capacity

The Wychwood rucksack does offer secure accommodation for a wide range of fishing gear, however, it’s important to note that this backpack does have its storage limitations. To provide you with a general idea of its holding capacity, here’s a list of the items I can comfortably fit into mine.

  • 3x 1kg bags of bait, including small tubs of pop-ups and wafters.
  • 4x bank sticks.
  • 1x accessory bag containing essential tools for rig making, bait preparation, etc.
  • PVA accessories.
  • 1x large catapult.
  • 2x small bait mixing tubs.
  • Weighing scales.
  • Bite alarms.
  • Rig organisers.
  • Rod rests and various other small miscellaneous items.

Despite carrying all of these items, there’s still room for additional smaller items if needed. I hope this provides you with a good gauge of what to expect in terms of storage capacity.

Design

Water Resistant

Although the Wychwood Comforter Packsmart Rucksack is made with high quality 600D material, I wouldn’t categorize it as entirely waterproof. Nonetheless, it does provide a high level of water resistance, which is usually adequate for most angling scenarios. I’ve personally used this rucksack in mild rain, and it demonstrated excellent performance, with no signs of moisture inside the compartments due to the thick material and added rain cover.

Build Quality

In my evaluation, the Wychwood Comforter Rucksack’s build quality is as good if not better than most of the higher-end products on the market, easily earning a solid 9/10 rating. The choice of materials, from the zippers to the padding, reflects good craftsmanship from Wychwood. Considering its price point, I would say that it delivers great value for the money you pay.

Pricing (£55)

The Wychwood Comforter Packsmart is around £55 to buy, as mentioned previously, you will have one main storage space along with three detachable compartments to organise your fishing kit. For more information on the additional items please keep reading.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Spacious Dimensions
  • Customizable to fit your needs
  • Perfect for carrying essential kit for day sessions

Cons

Extra Cost

Although this Wychwood rucksack can hold a reasonable amount of gear and is made to a high standard I need to let you know that I have also purchased two extra items that make up my specific rucksack setup, so please let me explain.

The Wychwood Comforter Mini Packsmart and the Wychwood Comforter Large Tackle Organiser both fit perfectly inside the main body of the Wychwood Comforter Packsmart Rucksack, making for furhter organsing space. All the items are as follows…

  • Wychwood Comforter Packsmart (£50-£55 on eBay)
  • Wychwood Comforter Mini Packsmart (£20 on eBay)
  • Wychwood Comforter Large Tackle Organiser (£20-£25 on eBay)

As you can see from the above, the overall price for all three items would be around the £100 mark, which is not the cheapest option out there. With that said, You do not need to purchase the additional two items on top of the Wychwood Comforter itself, the only reason I opted to buy them also is because I wanted the rucksack to be as organised as possible, but you will still have ample room within the main section of the Wychwood comforter pack smart and the three detachable compartments without spending those extra pennies on extras.

Alternatives

Below I have listed a few alternatives that I would recommend looking at if the Wychwood Comforter does not meet your needs. Although I do not own any of the ones below I have done my research to try and find alternatives that are not only priced similar to the Wychwood Comforter but also of the same great quality.

What I will say is that I do own other items from the same brand ranges as the ones I’m about to show you, so this is further reasoning behind my recommendations

Sonik SK-TEK Fishing Rucksack (£65)

Firstly, I have chosen the SK-TEK Rucksack by Sonik. The reason I have chosen this is because if I hadn’t of bought the Wychwood Comforter Rucksack I would have bought this instead, and if I’m being honest I wish I had.

My main reason for saying this is because I have other SK-TEC products including, Rod Sleeves for my Sonik Xtractor rods which I did reviews on and I love Sonik for their reasonable pricing and Quality.

This Rucksack has more than enough room to fit all of your essentials for day fishing and for around £65 I think this is well worth the money as I know what to expect from this piece of kit.

Fox R-Series Rucksack (£55)

Once again, I’d like to recommend another exceptional option. When it comes to Fox products, I’ve found them to be consistently reliable. Personally, I own a pair of Fox Horizon X3 Rods and Fox Reels, and they’ve proven to be fantastic.

The Fox Rucksack shares similar attributes with these products. It features separate compartments tailored for specific gear items, providing ample space to comfortably carry everything you need for day sessions by the bank.

This Fox Rucksack is priced at approximately £55, a reasonable investment in my opinion. With Fox’s reputation for delivering top-quality products. Also, if you prefer a backpack that remains as one whole unit, this option suits that style perfectly.

Drennan Specialist Compact Rucksack (£55)

Now, for my final recommendation, I’d like to introduce the Drennan Compact Rucksack. While I don’t own many Drennan products, I’m including this one because it’s been on my wish list, just like the SK-TEC Rucksack I mentioned earlier.

Upon visiting an angling store and physically inspecting this item, it became clear that it possesses all the essential qualities one would seek in a fishing rucksack for their primary angling needs. Similar to the previously discussed products, this rucksack offers convenient organization for your fishing gear and provides reliable protection, thanks to its 600D material construction. This Rucksack again comes in at around £55 so fair pricing for this kind of product.
