Wychwood Rod Holdall Overview

Hello, fellow anglers and gear enthusiasts! Today, I aim to present an in-depth review of another Wychwood product that has found its place in my Tackle collection – the Wychwood Comforter Fishing Rod Holdall. As an owner of this product, I’m here to provide you with a comprehensive overview that dives into every aspect of the Wychwood rod holdall.

My ultimate goal is to equip you with an all-insightful view of the Wychwood Comforter Holdall, stemming from my firsthand experience as a user. With this review, I want to paint a detailed picture of how this holdall functions, its practicality, and how it stands out regarding value and versatility.

Also, I will explain the intricate details of the materials used in its construction, assessing its durability and highlighting features that contribute to its utility. To add to this, I’ll also be situating the Wychwood Comforter Holdall within the larger landscape of fishing gear. By drawing comparisons with other holdalls on the market, we can truly gauge where this product shines and where it might have room for improvement, this is why I have included a separate section dedicated to the pros and cons.

Key Features

Top Quality, Material & Padding

A quality rod holdall plays an important role when it comes to keeping our fishing equipment in tip-top condition during transportation, and storage. The Wychwood Comforter is made from a robust 600D outer fabric, which feels quality to the touch, this gives a durable barrier that shields your gear from external elements, including abrasive surfaces and varying weather conditions.

Bespoke Zips

Attention to detail, the Wychwood Comforter holdall showcases a noteworthy feature in the form of bespoke zips shown in the picture above. These zips are tailored specifically for the Wychwood brand.

As you can see they are thick sturdy zips unlike what you find on low-end fishing tackle, this contributes to the overall functionality and durability as the zip line has a fabric guide on the inside which does help prevent the zip snaggy when trying to open and close, also preventing the zip from breaking.

Padded Shoulder Strap

Having a proper padded shoulder strap on the holdall shows a further commitment from Wychwood, to both comfort and quality. The padding on the shoulder strap is made from the same 600D material and does make all the difference when carrying for long distances.  This is also easily adjustable to fit your needs.

Strong External clips and buckles

Adding to the robust design you have sturdy external straps and buckles, These are perfectly designed to accommodate additional fishing gear. They serve as versatile extension of the holdall’s functionality, allowing you to securely fasten extra equipment such as a secondary landing net or a Fishing Umbrella.

Landing Net & Lead Pocket

The rod holdall has pockets designed specifically for your landing net and spare leads, this demonstrates a keen understanding of essential fishing requirements. The landing net pocket ensures you never leave the house without it eliminating the need to carry it separately.

The special pocket for leads makes sure you always have leads to spare, allowing for storage and quick retrieval of weights without rummaging through the main compartment. There is also a pocket at the bottom which is for carrying extra equipment like Landing nets, accompanied by the straps that I use to carry a Net Float.

13ft Wychwood Comforter, Dimensions, Capacity and Design

Dimensions (13ft version)

  • Length = 80 inches – 233 cm
  • Width = 10 inches – 25.4 cm
  • Height = 9.5 inches – 23.5 cm

Capacity (including reels)

The Wychwood rod holdall is capable of accommodating up to three rods complemented by their reels in a secure arrangement. Each rod has its own separate section within the holdall, this ensures that your fishing equipment remains not only shielded but also arranged properly for your next session.

Beyond just being able to hold your rods and reels I have noticed that there is plenty of space left if you need to carry more rods without the reels, as I also have two feeder rods stored in the holdall, along with my Carp rods.

Available sizes

  • 9ft
  • 10ft
  • 12ft
  • 13ft

Water Resistant

I have used this holdall in all weathers and as you may already know as an angler yourself, sometimes the weather isn’t too kind when on the bank. The Wychwood Comforter does have an impressive level of water resistance, although it falls just short of complete waterproofing, it is as water resistant as it needs to be.

One of the key contributors to this water-resistant quality is the 600D fabric in its material construction. Because this material is thick and hard-wearing it takes a considerable amount of water to penetrate through. This material effectively fends off moisture and light rain. This careful balance between water resistance and the 600D fabric’s durability reflects a deliberate design choice that does the job when it comes to safeguarding your gear from most common wet and boggy conditions.

Ideal for any rod types

The versatility of the Wychwood rod holdall goes beyond just Carp rods, this is also a great choice for other types of rods. This holdall offers a universal solution for any angler as there is nothing stopping you from using it for, spinning rods, feeder rods or float rods for example. The holdall’s design ensures a secure fit for each.

Wychwood Comforter Pros & Cons

My main aim with the review is to bring you a thorough perspective regarding this product, whether that be good or bad, so next up I will provide you with an unbiased pros and cons section that draws from my firsthand experience as an owner.  This should help you make a more informed decision.

I have written the pros in bullet format as most of these represent what I have written above, but for the cons I have written in full sentences to give you more context on the things to consider.

Pros

  • Water Resistant
  • Top Quality Material
  • Hard-wearing zips for longevity
  • Adequate padding internally and externally
  • Half the Price of similar products on the market
  • External Pockets for the Convenience of Extra Tackle

Cons

Holdall Length

While the Wychwood Comforter rod holdall has ample space for your fishing gear, its overall size for some people, including myself can also present a downside in certain situations. Obviously, if you have 2 piece rods then you will need to have a holdall of this size but it can be less than ideal if you only have a small car for transportation.

With that being said if your preference is large 2-piece rods then a holdall like this this is the only option. Just keep in mind that it might become cumbersome for you if you are seeking a more streamlined setup for specific fishing trips.

Alternative

As an angler who values both gear diversity and practicality, I understand the importance of considering the overall size of fishing equipment. This is why I have now opted for a more compact approach. This resonates with me personally, as I recently wrote a review on a telescopic rod that offers a pack-down size specifically tailored for easy transportation, which also allows you to store the rod and reel together without compromising, rod length, storage or transportation space. Internal Rod Straps

One aspect worth noting about the Wychwood Comforter rod holdall is the absence of internal rod straps, a feature that would prevent the clanging of rod sections during transport. This is something that I have noticed and would have liked to of had as I have seen it on other holdalls like the Fox R-Series Holdall, this adds extra support and secures your rods further.

Although this has not been a major issue it might be something to consider, but for the price I still believe you will not find much better overall, so in defence of the Wychwood holdall, it is half the price of similar quality products.

Alternative

If this is a concern for you then there are rod straps that you can buy for cheap on Amazon and eBay which will be more than sufficient and resolve this issue.

Reviews & Pricing

Above I have given you two considerations regarding this particular holdall. I have searched the web and found no bad reviews really, only good ones. With that being said, there are only so many reviews you will be able to find on this particular product, so I hope I have done a sufficient job of explaining all about the Wychwood Rod Holdall so that this is the only review you need.

Pricing

If I am to be open and honest, I will say that the price of this Holdall was the main factor that initially made me purchase it. There were cheaper alternatives but none close to the same quality for anywhere near the same price. I paid £45 for mine from a local tackle shop near me, but this can easily be found on Amazon, eBay and online tackle stores like Angling Direct and Total Fishing Tackle.

To find the best price, I would head over to eBay as independent sellers seem to be selling this exact Holdall for around £55 in the 13ft version and less for shorter versions like the 9ft, 10ft and 12ft.

I personally think that this is a really decent price, as some other brands are pricing similar products at around the £100 mark or more, some of which are not even as convenient or made to the same standards.

Conclusion

My goal was to share an in-depth review of the Wychwood Comforter Fishing Rod Holdall based on my personal experience as an owner. We have explored its standout features, pros and cons and alternatives.
