Sonik Xtractor Recon, Product Overview

Welcome to our comprehensive review of the Sonik Xtractor Recon 8ft telescopic Carp Rod, a game-changing addition to the world of angling. In this detailed assessment, we’ll be diving into the core elements of one of the most vital pieces of kit needed for any Carp fishing experience, with topics including, features, Design, Performance and Durability. By the end of this review, you’ll have a better understanding of how this rod holds up in the demanding world of carp fishing.

The particular model we are reviewing is the 8ft/3lb test curve version of the rod. My original choice would have been the 2.5lb TC version as I personally like the extra play in my rods. The reason I did not opt for the 2.5lb version will be explained later, but for now, let’s get into it.

Rod Features

Carbon Fibre Blank

On my first session with the Sonik Xtractor Recon 8ft Telescopic Carp Rods, I got the chance to really notice the sleek design of the rods and the intricate details like the matt black carbon fibre blank. Once they were set up on the bank it came apparent to me that I had made a good choice. The materials and construction give these rods progressive power action and promise a proper angling experience at a reasonable cost.

VARI-TAPER

What also caught my attention was the VARI-TAPER joint construction, for a relatively cheap rod the overall construction seems great, this also became evident as I put the rod through its paces in challenging fishing conditions. With that said, it’s reassuring to know that this rod can handle the pressure and hold up to those hard sessions.

M-Series DL Black Guides

Guiding my line effortlessly are the M-SERIES DL black guides, these are very lightweight yet designed to ensure my cast glides smoothly through the air. The 40mm guide pattern and the clever Anti-frap tip leaves no room for those annoying casting hiccups, allowing me to focus solely on the excitement of the catch.

17mm Black DPS Reel Seat

As I mounted my reel onto the 17mm black DPS reel seat, I appreciated the thoughtful compatibility with a variety of reels – a small detail that speaks volumes about the rod’s user-friendly approach. I have matched the rods up with Sonik 5000 Carp reels to make them a set, but you can use any reel you deem fit really, I probably wouldn’t go above a 6000 reel though for balance purposes. The custom Sonik clip also adds further attention to detail, ensuring that my line remains intact and unhindered.

Slim Japanese Shrink Handle

The Extractor Recon comes with a slim Japanese shrink rubber handle which does deliver a firm and comfortable grip that lets me feel every movement beneath the water’s surface, great for feeling the lead down. They also added the Sonik logo on a black anodized butt cap for that personal touch. The recon range only offers one option in terms of handle variety, so if you prefer cork handles then maybe you could try the original Sonik Xtractor which I believe comes in a 6/9/10ft versions.

30-inch pack down length

I was pleasantly surprised when I discovered that this rod’s transport length of 76cm (30 inches). If I’m brutally honest this is one of the main reasons why I wanted the Sonik Xtractor Recon in the 8ft model. It’s a true travel companion that doesn’t compromise on performance or convenience.

Design pros & Cons

Pros

  • Compact 8ft transport length offers an advantage for spontaneous angling adventures.
  • Portable design fits easily into a car trunk or backseat.
  • Enables unplanned fishing sessions with convenience.
  • Ideal for keeping in the car for spontaneous sessions
  • High-quality design enhances portability and ease of use.
  • Tailored for lakeside escapes, adding excitement to angling.

Cons

Apologies for not bullet pointing this section, but it’s best that I explain my point here with better context. While I have the 3.00lb Test Curve version of this rod, I have found complaints not just online but from other anglers regarding the 2.5lb test curve version of the Sonik Xtractor Recon.

It’s essential to address a particular aspect that has raised concerns among some anglers. I have seen a few reviews and also spoke to someone in person, who has highlighted a potential vulnerability in the tip strength on the 2.5lb version, with instances of rods snapping during casting when subjected to heavier weights.

Now, this would make me suggest that people are buying the 2.5lbs version and loading it up with a similar weight that you would use on the 3.00lb or even 3.5lb version, which can become a recipe for disaster if you are not fully aware, so although this is a concern I would factor in my opinion when looking to buy as you may be someone who prefers 2.5lb TC rods. Anglers must be aware of these limitations and consider their fishing style and preferences when opting for the 2.5lb test curve version of the Sonik Xtractor Recon.

Performance

Casting

The Sonik Extractor Recon with a test curve of 3.00lb is probably the best all-rounder for most people in my opinion, the 3.00lb test curve allows for relatively heavy rig setups to be cast long distances, whilst keeping a fair bit of rod action when playing a Carp. I have tried and tested the rod with multiple methods of fishing including the use of PVA solid bags and others that require heavier terminal tackle.

If you are looking for rods that are for pure casting ability, then these rods might not be the best option for you, although they are well-rounded overall, the length will be the limiting factor as they are only 8ft in length they are not particularly made for long-distance casting unlike a 12 or 13ft rod.

With that being said, the 3.00lb TC does give you plenty of distance for most scenarios whilst also giving you the option to go Carp Stalking where you can set up in those tight spots.

Again, as I have mentioned before in other articles, depending on the type of fishing and the size of venues you fish will be the deciding factor as to whether these rods really fit your preference or not. For small to medium-sized venues these rods will be as good as any, for larger venues where casting distance is imperative, then I would opt for the 12ft Sonik Xtractor Recon, also telescopic.

Accuracy

The solid Construction of these rods does lay the foundation for exceptional casting accuracy. Its carefully engineered components, including the innovative VARI-TAPER joint construction and specialized guides, do help you to streamline the casting process and optimize your distance as much as possible.

While the rod will play a pivotal role in your casting ability, it’s worth acknowledging that the ultimate casting accuracy is an interplay between you and your gear. Your technique, timing, and finesse are some of the factors that will elevate your casting, but all things being equal, there are certainly no issues when it comes to the casting ability of these rods.

Fish Playing Finesse

A few concerns always arise when it comes to Telescopic Rods, and the main one seems to be regarding the telescopic part of the rod itself, the question may sound like this “Does the rod twist when casting or playing a fish”?

My answer is, NO! or at least up to now, I haven’t come across this issue with the two Sonik Xtractor Recon Rods that I own. I have caught many Carp with these rods, some of them being in the high teens and had a great time reeling them in, but that’s it up to this point, so I couldn’t speak on how the rods will hold up when playing a Carp that is 20/30/40lbs plus.

On the upside, when I set the rods up by extending the butt section, it does tighten to a point where the rod is straight and held firm, without easily twisting, so this does give me confidence in the telescopic sections of these rods. Over time this may change due to wear and tear but for now, they seem pretty solid and good for the job.

Performance Pros and Cons

Pros

  • Versatile all-rounder
  • Decent Rod Actin for Carp Play
  • Balanced Performance
  • Collaborative Accuracy
  • Adaptable for Various Venues
  • Confidence in Telescopic Design

Cons

  • Limited Long Distance Casting
  • Carp Size Consideration
  • Preference and Venue Dependence

Build Quality and Longevity

I know we have touched on the build quality already, but the last thing I would like to say regarding the subject say is, for the price of these rods you can’t really go wrong, up to now I have had no real issue with the rods at all and they have quickly become my go to rods for most venues.

As for the Longevity, only time will tell, I have had these rods for probably 4-5 months from the publish date of this article so I will not say too much on this subject apart from the fact that if I look after them I’m sure they will last years to come, here are the basic ways to make sure your rods are always ready for your next session.

  • Clean & Dry the collapsable sections before closing the rods down, preventing water damage where the joints meet.
  • Pack them into a suitable rod sleeve after every use. Sonik SKTec 8ft Rod Sleeve Review.

The Sonik Xtractor Recon Range

Here is a list of the available options for the Sonik Xtractor Recon, The Recon range is the smallest when it comes to transport length, making them super convenient even in the 12ft version, as that also breaks down to a mere 50 inches.
