I have used this Carp Cradle on many occasions unhooking fish of various sizes and I am happy with the overall size and fish safety it offers. It is a fairly large Cradle that’s perfect for handling fish up to the high twenties.

The pictures above illustrates the size of the Carp Cradle. In the first picture we have an 11lb Common Carp and in the second picture we have 9lb Common Carp. I’ve had carp up to 25lbs in this Carp Cradle and it houses them pretty well, but with that said, I don’t think this Carp Cradle would be ideal for Carp larger than 30lbs in my opinion.

Judging off how much space a 25lb Carp takes up in this particular Cradle, I believe 30lbs would be around the capacity limit for this, as it would became quite awkward to handle correctly and efficiently because there wouldn’t be much room for movement when unhooking a Carp of this size.

Material

The Carp Cradle is made from a typical 210D PVC waterproof material which seems to be hardwearing with no signs of water damage or tears as of yet. It dries out pretty quickly and is easy to clean after use for following sessions on the bank.

One main concern with an item like this is the potentialof mould growth due to moisture damage, but again, I’ve not come across any problems with damage caused by inevitable moisture exposure.

Build Quality

NGT are well known as a budget brand. While there might be certain NGT items you might want to approach with caution, this Carp Cradle has proved itself to be a top quality purchase. I have used it enough times now to fully test its durability and would consider it a worthy purchase even over some of the more expensive brands that sell similar products.

The value it provides, considering both cost and performance, makes it a compelling choice if you are seeking a cost-effective yet high-quality solution for carp care.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Good Quality
  • Idea for carrying other tackle items
  • Easy to set up and pack away
  • Reasonable Price (£40)
  • Lightweight
  • Durable
  • Much more effective than a standard flat unhooking mat

Cons

Space Constraints with Larger Carp

  • Handling a 25lb Carp in the cradle took up a significant amount of space, potentially hindering efficient and comfortable unhooking. This could be a drawback when dealing with larger fish.
  • When packed away in its carry case it is fairly large, its not heavy by any means but does have the packdown dimensions of approxamatley 1 Meter x 25-30cm. This may be no concern to you but I thought it would be worth mentioning.
  • Although this Carp Cradle is more effective than standard flat unhooking mat, I would much prefer a raised, Carp Cradle with foldable legs. This makes for an even more effective catch and release experience but normally comes at somewhat of an additional cost.

Alternatives

While the NGT Carp Cradle excels in crucial areas, it’s valuable to explore alternative options that address potential shortcomings identified in this article. The selection of other alternatives is influenced by my perspectives on features that might be lacking with this specific NGT Carp Cradle.

The primary feature I consider superior in a carp cradle is the inclusion of foldable legs. Opting for a cradle with this feature creates a slight dip in the middle, reducing the likelihood of the catch jumping out when the fish is unsettled during the unhooking process.

Some carp cradles with this design also allow the addition of water, providing an even more comfortable environment for the fish. Utilizing a cradle with foldable legs enhances the overall smoothness of the catch and release process for you and the fish.
